Hand-made envelopes were all that were available for use both commercial and domestic prior to 1845 and the potential for the production of cellophane envelopes was still 50 years from a possibility.

A British patent for the first envelope-making machine was granted in 1845. The envelopes produced at this time were not like the ones we know of today. The envelopes produced were pre-cut shaped sheets that were fed into the machine for creasing and folding to form a rectangular enclosure.

A paste or adhesive was used to treat the edges of the over lapping flaps to secure the envelope. It was nearly 50 years later when a successful machine for producing pre-gummed envelopes was available.

In 1845 a patented machine for mass -producing diamond-shaped sheets for conversion to envelopes was available. At the beginning of the 19th century the folded diamond-shaped sheet was used as a wrapper for invitations and letters for people who had the time to cut them out.  A long and well-established international business today. envelope-making machine manufacture is thriving. This short-arm-cross style is mostly used in the production of pocket envelopes with the closing flap on the short side. Standard style is the more common style with the closing flap on the long side.Mechanical printing and duplicating equipment including the typewriter, which was used up to the 1970′s for addressing envelopes, are currently designed to process rectangular sheets .

A top of the line envelope-making machine cost around $1 million dollars at the end of the 2oth century. A machine like this could produce 1200 pre-gummed envelopes per minute in boxes of 1000. Manufacturing costs this high in the 19h and 20th centuries allowed for very few envelope-making manufacturers to appears. The number of manufacturers continued to remain low into the 21st century and a single company ended up satisfying the world demand for these pre-gummed envelopes.
